Free Student Debt Clinic for Union Members
The Joint Union Council of Central Michigan University is sponsoring a FREE 90-minute workshop on student loan debt at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Lakeshore 125 of the Bovee Student Center.
More than 40 million people in the United States carry student loan debt that is cumulatively worth more than $1.3 trillion. That is about $30,000 per borrower. Many people struggle with making their monthly payments, while others worry that this debt will follow them throughout their life.
The federal government has free programs available that can help many student loan borrowers lower their monthly payments and, in some cases, even have their debt forgiven. Unfortunately, these programs are not well known, and can be somewhat confusing – opening a space for scammers who charge borrowers to enroll in free programs.
The American Federation of Teachers, the parent organization of the Union of Teaching Faculty, has developed a 90-minute clinic to provide the basic information on these programs. Moe Fitzsimons of AFT Michigan will present the workshop, which is open to members of all of CMU's unions.
